Grimm Artisanal Ales
Started by Lauren and Joe Grimm twelve years ago, Grimm Artisanal Ales is celebrating the opening of its first location on Metropolitan Avenue. The duo started fermenting and producing beverages such as mead, cider, and beer while students in art school and have turned their passion into a renowned craft brewery.
Initially, Lauren and Joe brewed for friends, but that quickly turned into pop-ups at art shows and other events. Eventually, the pair would move to New York for their art careers, but after obtaining their brewing license they switched their focus to Grimm Artisanal Ales. Without a space to brew their carefully produced beers, they turned to nomadic brewing where they would rent space, hoppers, barrels, etc. from existing breweries and work with mobile bottlers. Although they recommend working with other breweries, they believe the relationship needs to be constantly cultivated and trust between both parties is key.
After several years of nomadic brewing and receiving multiple accolades for their delicious concoctions, Grimm Artisanal Ales has found a home in industrial East Williamsburg. Lauren and Joe are excited to have a space of their own where they can work on quality control and further refine their process. Grimm Artisanal Ales currently offers IPAs, stouts, sours, pale ales, and porters, but are constantly experimenting with new flavors and ingredients. They also stick to their artistic roots and design their own labels and cans with the help of artist Gretta Johnson.
Although space is hard to come by, the couple believes there is still room for more breweries in New York’s beer scene. Having their own space in Brooklyn has opened more opportunities for collaborations with breweries and restaurants in the area. In the future, Grimm Artisanal Ales hopes to expand its tap room and continue making the best beer possible.
