Makers of the food destinations that mark our streets, Shanghai Mobile Kitchen Solutions (MKS) has been in business for over forty years. Originally located in Chinatown, this family-owned and operated business has called Williamsburg home since 1989.
The company was started by Jimmy Wong and two business partners, but soon after its beginning, the business partners left and Jimmy was joined by his wife Silvia, and later on by their son Ernie, who heads the company today. Initially, manufacturers of equipment and furnishings for Chinese cooking such as woks, Shanghai MKS specializes in kitchens, bars, home furnishings, mobile vending trailers and vehicles, and custom design projects.
A staple of the kitchen and restaurant equipment scene in Chinatown and Lower Manhattan, the company’s transition to a larger space on Gerry Street allowed it to grow and take advantage of the food truck boom. Shanghai MKS has helped create some of the most popular food trucks found throughout the city including Korilla BBQ, Waffles & Dinges, and Van Leeuwen Ice Cream.
Through the Shanghai Stainless Product & Design Co., they also create custom stainless-steel cabinetry and countertops for commercial and residential clients looking for unique and functional kitchens with an industrial flair. In addition to creating kitchens, Shanghai MKS provides clients with CAD design, kitchen redesigns, and mobile cart inspection and repairs.
As the image of food carts and trucks has changed, Shanghai MKS has seen more and more interest in its products and services; many of its clients are from the thriving food scene in the five boroughs. While changes in permitting, health regulations, and the high cost of doing business is challenging, the Wongs are still passionate about their business after all these years. They hope to continue to be a valued resource for food entrepreneurs and the New York City community.
